<span class="s1">About every fifth chapter or so Jean introduces the reader to another resident of Goodwood and their connection to the missing people. This is not a detective novel in the true sense because, while the mystery is solved, it isn’t the work of one person but of the town’s accumulative memory.</span></div>

<span class="s1">This is a great, slow read for anyone who loves Australiana, the 90s or mystery novels. It does touch on some difficult issues such as domestic violent and teen drinking, but everything is handled with respect. My only problem with this novel was the difficultly I had keeping track of many the characters. All in all, I would recommend this book.</span></div>

This dystopian book features a wall, a girl whose never seen the sky before, and flying machines called 'pixies'. What more could a reader want? This book also features a nice, unguessable twist towards the end that turns the story on its head and makes you rethink everything you thought was true. There are some great, original elements in this story, the biggest one being magic. The whole idea of magic is manipulated to fit into this twisted society. In this way, the book is a little disturbing, but in others ways its exciting, fascinating and cleaver. Also, a must read for the dystopian lover.</div>

This book is a little out of my normal reading zone. It's dystopian, but without the magic element. When I first read the blurb I first thought was to dump it back on the book shelf but for some strange, unknown reason I ended up taking it home with me, and I'm sure glad I did. There are definitely dark elements in this book; poverty, death, and murderer are just a few of the themes, however from the darkest of holes comes the most powerful friendship bonds. Bacigalupi has masterfully conquered, and redefined friendship and loyalty in this book making it an inspiring read. (On a side note, the protagonist is a male so any for anyone looking for strong, independent male character, this is the one for you.)</div>

Putting aside walled cities for a moment, my next favourite subject is assassins, and <i>Throne of Glass</i> is just that. What I love about this book is the strong female character. She is so sure of herself the entire way through the book and I love that about her. I love that she knows who she is and she isn't afraid to show it. My only disappointment was the fact that Celeana (the worlds greatest eighteen-year-old assassin) ended up with the wrong the guy. I was so rooting for the other man. All. The. Way.</div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #783f04;">I loved <i>Divergent</i> and had high hopes for book two. Thankfully I was not disappointed. The personalities of the protagonists are further explored in this action packed adventure. Tris has so many character flaws that she practically jumped off the page. She did so many things differently to how I would have, but her thoughts and motivations were clearly expressed and the story flowed like a dream. My only complaint was with the story-line itself—Roth continued to return to themes and problems I'd seen a hundred times before. This repetition, however was counteracted by the intense relationships and character development. <i>Insurgent</i> is quite a violent read and I wouldn't really recommend it for anyone under the age of fifteen.</span></span></div>

I think I was a little late off the bandwagon with this one, but when I got started I didn't look back. The story's premise is amazing—it's original, thought provoking, and definitely an issue I believe should be treated with more care in todays society. I can see the senario of this novel coming true in the next couple of hundred years, making this book a really eye opener. </span></span></div>

I read this book in year 12, five years ago, and it serious depressed and confused me. Now that I'm older, and have had more experience with this genre, I returned to this book with new eyes. I recommend you read it, if only for the writing style itself, which is unique and beautiful, conveying the characters feelings and thoughts, as well as displaying the world in a clear, readable light. This book is still as depressing as ever, but reading it for a second time, I better appreciated all it has to offer. </span></span><br />

It was a good read, once I got into it. I'll admit I put it down after a couple of pages and it took me two months before I touched it again, but it was worth it. The story is interesting, not flawless, but it swept me along all the same. The character development was the most impressive aspect of the novel, with trained assassin Ismae having to make her way in the male dominated world she dislikes so much. She learns trust and love, but most notably she learns the importance of self-awareness and self-respect. All in all, a nice little read.</span></span></div>

It follows Sibeal, great granddaughter of Sorcha from book 1 <i>Daughter of Sevenwaters, </i>on her journey of self discovery. It's filled with family, love, romance, mystical beings, fortune telling, and brave tattooed warriors. What more could a girl want? I read this book in one sitting (in the university library when I should have been studying) because I couldn't put it down, and trust me I tried several times.</span></span></div>

<span style="letter-spacing: 0px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #783f04;">This is book one in Marillier's new Young Adult series. It reminded me of <i>Wildwood Dancing</i>, however it can be read by younger readers. Like all her books it follows the journey of a strong, independent woman as she seeks refuge in a war-torn landscape. I was not my favourite of Marillier's novels, however I joined the easy read, and it made a nice change from her normally intensively complicated plots.</span></span></div>

I read this book in one sitting. The mystery is thrilling, but not because there is a lot of violence, or deep dark elisit affairs, but because of the characterization. Bee has a great personality. Her knack for noticing the ordinary and realising the extraordinary is beautifully counterbalanced by her inquisitive nature. </span></span><br />

His character was enhanced by a number of strange facts about animal mating habits, that were more interesting than endearing. The only downfall is that Tody's facts added strangeness to an otherwise straight-forward murder. It was his randomness that held the whole book together, and without him, and despite Bee's amazing personality, there would have been nothing of extreme noteworthiness.</span></span><br />

After <i>A pocketful of eyes</i>, I couldn't wait to get my hands on <i>Love-shy</i>. There are a number of similarities between the two. First, the characters are original, with wonderful personalities. Penny's nosiness is both funny and endearing, while Nick is unusual but really sweet and shy. Second, interesting facts are the glue; they stick the characters together, enhance the plot, and fill any of the less action packed scenes.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 19px;"><br /></span></span><br />

Not only does Penny learn about what is it to be love-shy and how to help others, but she discovers more about herself in the processes.</span></span><br />

Juliette's 'power' is a great idea, and I love how Mafi creates such strong tension between the characters, especially Juliette and her love interest Adam. However, the world in which they live has been seen before. It is not so very different from that of 'Matched', or even 'The Hunger Games' in which the society is controlled by a suppressive force. Luckily, Mafi's writing style and command of words outweigh the negativity of the unoriginal thoughts in a way that makes this book a wonderful read. I was sitting on the edge of my chair the entire time! </span></span><br />

I'm right on my word target! 20,000 words!<br />

It's been a little bit of a struggle, like yesterday when I finished work at 8pm and all I wanted to do was sleep. But, luckily, I toughened up and managed to write some words before collapsing on my bed.<br />
<br />
At the moment, the main problem with my novel is that I don't know where it is going. Every few days I have to come up with a new idea because I keep finding myself repeating words and slowing down while my characters once again contemplate the meaning of life. In order to combat this slowness, I have developed/borrowed a couple of gorilla tactics:<br />
1) Add a new character. This is a great why to speed up a dying storyline. In my case I added an assassin who tried to kill my two MCs!<br />
2) Add a subplot. This is a great way to add words, fill space and add more adventure. In my case, one of my MC has to travel through the forest for a night and a day looking for a lost object. The object is important although it's not crucial for the main storyline, it's more of a red-herring.<br />
3) Add conflict. In real life not everyone gets along, even best friends fight, families disagree and sisters argue. Why should it be any different in your novel. In my case, my MC and her brother have an argument about his use of violence. She disagrees, he yells at her and she becomes scared of him. This tension underlines several other scenes until they finally resolve their differences. (... or do they?)<br />

I have been typing away at my novel, eating up words. It is now 7,402 words long. A little under the parr but not too bad if I do say so myself. The NaNoWriMo stats say I have to write 1,600 words each day to reach my goal of 50,000 by 30th November but every day I get that little bit faster and write just a few more words than expected.<br />

Today, day 5, was my first writer's group meeting. We met at the library of our local university and sat in a great typing circle. There wasn't a lot of talking, I think everyone was a little nervous, but there was a lot of writing with each of us trying to out type the others. I reached a nice 2,000 words in just under 2 and a half hours.<br />

Today is actually the 2nd day even though I thought it was the 1st, so I only started today and not yesterday. But even with that set back it was full steam ahead. I managed to pump out a good 1,700 words. Only a few more to go!<br />

To keep myself encouraged I have decided to use this blog to record my 2011 NaNoWriMo experience. Through thick and thin, heartbreak and betrayal I will continue to update this blog as long as I am still participating.<br />
<br />
And on that note, as I am about to graduate from uni I think it is a good idea to continue to focus on my two remaining essays. So I have decided any words I write for assessment, I will also be counting as part of my 50,000 word goal.<br />
